New Meanwhile, in the Ukraine.
Donetsk, Ukraine (CNN) -- As the Ukrainian military warns of plans to assault this rebel-controlled city, separatist militants are thinning on the streets and their leaders are canceling public appearances.

Government security officials said Monday they were preparing for a "massive assault" on Donetsk, state media reported.

Inside the city, shelling has already pushed some residents underground into cellars and half-built basements.

In a dim labyrinth beneath a government building, dozens of women and children sleep on mattresses they carried below ground to take shelter from the violence.
Does Putin want war in Ukraine?

They say they believe separatists who have told them the Ukrainian army are American-backed fascists, set on attacking ethnic Russians.

"They crush us, the damn Americans. What are they doing? Where there is war in the world, they have a part," one woman said.

"Does Putin want war in the Ukraine?" This isn't a serious question, right? Who is doing the bombing? Who is the US backing? We can only hope that, once again, the Russian leadership will prove themselves the superior world's statesmen just like they did in October of '62.
New Re: And from the BBC:
Residents complain about intimidation from pro-Russia rebels.

There are numerous reports of armed rebels confiscating cars or forcing men in the city to dig trenches at gunpoint.

Some say they are afraid to report their complaints to the authorities in the self-proclaimed republic in case they will be targeted for further reprisals.

One resident tells us that many people still support the rebels because they watch Russian TV.

But she adds: "I also know many who hope that the Ukrainian army will come soon and kick the rebels out of here.

"But these people keep quiet. Often they don't even share these hopes with their relatives."

Earlier there was a quote from a rebel leader who said some people had to be executed to maintain order and avoid chaos.

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."”
