Stumbled upon this history (from the flood of '37-->now) of a brilliant Mayor (whose 'patron Saint' was Confucius!)
To wit: "..that a city which nurtures the arts will (attract all the people necessary to) prosper in all ways.."

It chronicles how, as an idea to foster a local Orchestra began to founder ... for the usual reasons.. no money; then (another brilliant idea) occurred:
Commission works/solicit same, from New composers--from here or anywhere. Then record same (lots of Ampex tape recorders.)

Initially the locals were averse.. "what IS this stuff?" etc. But they tried it.. some came back... then more.. educated ears.
An unmatched record ensued (unequalled by Any other orchestra here or elsewhere)
culminating maybe: when Shostakovich and other USSR composers came in '57--and were enthralled, as were the sold-out audiences: unprecedented standing ovations.
Worldwide publicity. And so it-->goes, there.

Anyway, whatever your relationship to orchestras--it's an amazing story, gestated by a young graduate of a NY 'conductor's academy' who,
to quote a disgraced former honcho-perp: stayed the course.

For moi, pretty iggerant of 'Louisville' generally, the denizens of that place earn high marks for their willingness to--at least, Listen to the unfamiliar--then act. As the flic demonstrates.
There are some sublime pieces in the flic--one in particular, by a Chinese composer (Chow Wen-Ying, IIRC) and his post-conducting anecdote.
Which anecdote seemed spot-on: (also with the visuals selected)--it was indeed 'pure poetry', though the composer wasn't sure..
Why this woman was Pointing at him! afterwards ... (to say, just that.)

Bon appetít.
