I played with a guy who did that to bows
He was classically trained, but the money at the time/location was in playing country. So he played the SHIT out of Orange Blossom Special and Devil Went Down to Georgia. On a $15k violin.

I think what happened to their bows is not uncommon.
But yes, they were playing *extremely* hard.
I have a concert on DVD by string quartet Bond. Their bows get progressively more ragged during the concert! Wade. Just Add Story http://justaddstory.wordpress.com/
