New Nice

New Ditto.
New "XP mode?" Why Fisher-Price; WTF is wrong with W2K mode?
New There is no W2K mode.
Heck, I'd rather have that anyway.

New But appearance can still be set to "Windows Classic" (=NT4)?
New That apparently...
Is not really an option since themeing is still driven by Windows 7 and its crap.

New XP Mode
XP Mode is VirtualPC and a licensed Windows XP VHD. You don't even have to use or see the XP desktop if you run apps on it in Virtual App mode (basically an RDP session).
We use it here for an ancient app or two. Works fine.

PS: Apps run in virtual mode use the title bar and window trim of XP and not Windows 7, If you set the Virtual XP to classic theme you'll get classic title bars for Virtual Apps.

New I had something at work that required < 7...
For some reason, I couldn't get the installer to work in Win7Pro's XP mode even after fighting it for quite a while.

I ended up installing VirtualBox and putting XP (or was it 2K?) on that, and that worked fine.

Cheers,
Scott.
New why did you go for 7 and not 8 or RT?
"Pictures are better then words because some words are big and hard to understand"

New As much as CRC...
Says Fisher-Price interface for WindowsXP...

I think Windows 8 is Horseshit and it is a cartoony interface. It is an interface made for 13 year old kids. It is that same, I feel about KDE's attempt at a "Tablet" interface. It is the same , I feel about GNOME's attempt at a "Tablet" Interface. It is the same i feel about Canonical's attempt at a "Tablet" interface.

Windows 8 is late to the ball game and though they did it as well as any of the other UI designer's... it is *CRAP*.

RT IS ONLY for Surface made with ARM and has *ZERO* appeal to me since Linux works better on ARM.

I like the interface I've been able to have for the last 16+ years with Linux and some of that time with Windows. If I'm going to have it, I'm going to have it the way I want it.

I will *never* have Windows 8. I've chosen to not use Gnome, KDE, Unity that have all gone insane and assume everyone wants a TABLET/Mobile interface, even on their DESKTOP or LAPTOP. And THAT... will not happen. I'd sooner go Full Screen Text mode than deal with these idiots forcing me to work a different way.

Heck, keyboard keys not working the way I've used them for 16+ years (like OSX did for me) slows me down significantly and forces me to turn automatic things into things that cause me to pause. I don't need that. I don't want that. I won't tolerate it. What makes you think I want this (made for a) 12 year old interface. Are you crazy?

New I rarely see XP "FP",Vista "Glass" or whatevritscalled in 7
Control panel, "Appearance and Personalization", Theme "Windows Classic". In XP it was still called "NT 4" or "Windows 95"; in 7 it's "Windows Classic"; can't recall if it changed before or after Vista, or if that had yet another name for it.

Same old username (as above), but now on iki.fi

(Yeah, yeah, it redirects to the same old GMail... But just in case I ever want to change.)
New Yes...
I only really like the W2K/NT4/98 Interface for Windows.

Right now, on Linux, I am using XFCE. They have stated in the mailing list, they are going to continue using GTK version 2 until version 3, works out things to make it work better.

Heck, GIMP still is using GTK v2. What makes you think GTK version 3 is going to eclipse version 2 anytime soon.

Oh, by the way... (not really for CRC) but do you know what *GTK* stands for? (Hint: http://www.gtk.org/)...

Yeah, *NOT* GNOME. Though it is managed by the GNOME Foundation.

New Not for me, why? Because I totally knew that.
Yes, actually, I did.
New I'm sure.
Of all the people I ask... and people that supposedly have "knowledge" in that arena, mistakenly cal it GNOME ToolKit... You would be one I'd expect I'd not have to correct.

Sure. GNOME might use it, but it is NOT that. It surprises most people I correct. They then go on to say "It doesn't matter." Again, I correct them that yes it does because it harms other project that use GTK to be associated with GNOME.

I leave it at that.

New 1st thing we did with M's Win8 laptop
Was reformat it with Win 7.
New The Crucial M4 is nice.
If you can live with "512" GB, it's a good choice. It's a pain to try to shrink larger partitions to fit on it though.

Have fun with it.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Right now...
I'm not worried with the hard disk or the amount of memory. That is a "later" thing

Currently, I can do all I need to do in 4GB of memory and a 200GB disk with 30GB dedicated to Windows XP and the rescue partitions. Though I've only booted Windows 4 times now on this T61 I have right now. Those were to update Firmware and so on for the hardware.

I doubt I'll boot Windows on this new one any more often.

New It has been here for 5 days.
Came in Monday at 2:20PM

Windows 7 fully updated on it... and now dual booting Debian Sid on it.

Swapped over to it about an hour ago. Nice and peppy.

Also Duplicated the build on the T410. It is also peppy, but not as fast. Good back or alternate.

Things that crippled the T61... the T410 excels at. the T530 blows them both away. Quicky quick. Audio is awesome. Seriously... I'm friggin impressed.
