New Ghost ceiling fan
Our front room has a ceiling fan in light fixture. The switch is by the front door, and could be knocked by someone rushing out.

It seemed to turn itself on. Randomly. Everyone says it wasn't them. When it was down to 2 people in the house, I had to explain it was me or him, and it was NOT me, or the ghost, and left it at that. I TAPED the switch.

And it happened again. ARRGGG!

Hmmmm.

The 2nd floor hall has 2 switches. 1 controls the hall ceiling light. The other

SOB! It controls the front hall light/fan. I had no idea, and assumed it did a wall socket. I've been here a year, and am still discovering things.

New duct tape is cheaper :-)
Any opinions expressed by me are mine alone, posted from my home computer, on my own time as a free American and do not reflect the opinions of any person or company that I have had professional relations with in the past 58 years. meep

New Re: Ghost ceiling fan
A couple years ago, before I had my back surgery, we had a fan installed in my wife's study/office. It has a remote switch, like a one button garage door clicker. The fan turns itself on at random times. I don't know if it's power surges or something else can generate a compatible signal, or what. Since it's random, it makes it difficult to analyze. Be happy you have something you can figure out.
New Same here. Just figured it was RFI.

One of our ceiling lights with a radio remote always turns itself on if there has been a power glitch (e.g. lightning), but rarely on other occasions too.

Cheers,
Scott.
New We've got one of those
Whoever gets up first can turn on a downstairs light so they can see where they're going without waking everyone else up. Took us a couple of weeks to figure out what that second switch was, but there were no outlets nearby so we knew it couldn't be that.

New Switch oddities...
I was to say that you Americans do have odd switch placements, but then I remembered I grew up with someone who liked them to make sense. Even today, Dad will not have a light switch in a strange spot.

Friends' and relatives' houses, though. One relative had a random light switch in the middle of the wall of the (indoor) laundry. It turned a light on in the ceiling cavity. Completely non-obvious.

And then there are always posts on Stack Exchange's Home Improvement site from people trying to figure out some weird wiring. Or sometimes trying to create weird wiring...

Wade.
