New Fetchmail was ESR
Who I regard as an even bigger blowhard than RMS.
New Ahhh yes. Pretty much DJB on steroids.

New Cut from the same cloth, but I found ESR more approachable.
But yes, Fetchmail was clever and powerful... right up to the point where it decided something wasn't following its interpretation of the standard. At which point it ignores you.

New A misogynist and a right-wing gun nut, too.
Yeah, me and him were never ever going to see eye to eye.
New You ever meet him?
I have. Spent a bit of time with him at a programming conference once. Stayed in contact for while. Swapped a bit of code.

While his macho karate pistol action with his hot lawyer wife may annoy you, he's earned it all.

He couldn't walk straight due to birth defects on his feet, he had a serious shyness problem, and when he talked he was incapable of eye contact. He was presenting a lecture on portable unix programming, and he KNEW his shit, but he was a terrible communicator. I could not imagine him getting a date.

He has worked hard and EARNED everything he has, and has been a net positive for open source. I respect the guy.

And his writing is great. Both informative and entertaining.

And he is NOTHING like RMS. They'd both spit at the suggestion. So maybe they spit the same. But other than that, no way.

New DJB was just a contrarian
New Not that I recall
Pure memory, feel free to google correct.

Fetchmail already existed. ESR adopted it as part of his project to understand open source programming projects, and it was part of his online The Art of Unix Programming book.

I always force new programmers to read the 1st several chapters of The Art of Unix Programming before allowing them any code access.
New ESR totally rebuilt fetchmail.
He wrote an article about it. The only thing that remains from the original project is the idea and the name.

Not that that's bad, of course. The original idea was very specific and did a lot of unnecessary magic, really. ESR's big contribution to fetchmail was to hand off that type of handling to other processes that were always going to exist and did that sort of thing better anyway. You could say he made it more Unix-y. :-)

New He's still a narcissicistic misogynist racist git.
And a gun loon to boot.
New No argument there. :-)

             HELLO ALEX, - (folkert)

If your role can be replaced by Keanu Reeves miming walking into a non-existent wall, then you probably need to go back to waiting tables at the Ground Round--make that the homeless shelter.
