New Got a new monitor... how big, is to big?
I just got a Dell 23" ST2310 1920x1080 for my IBM/Lenovo T61 for $60, its less than 2 years old. They guy used it for a dedicated HD DVD/BlueRay player. Less than 100 hours on it.

I got (a bit ago) a new Dell 24" ST2421L 1920x1080 for my Mac Mini from Best Buy for $123 on an in-store Manager's Special with a "coupon" plus a "rewards" percentage off.

I still have two serviceable Samsung SyncMaster 216BW (1680x1050 and made May 2007). Both will end up on my HP XW8400 once I fix both of them, they have faulty capacitors leaking voltage and causing *slow* turn on and brightness. Its a know design oversight on that generation of LCD monitors form Samsung. Replace it with a slightly larger and higher voltage Electrolytic, Voila, problem solved.

The two Dell monitors are a bit "bluer" to my eyes and a bit more pleasant to me... my wife K, can't tell the difference.

I have to say... 23" to 24" are about the largest I think I'm going to every have... they are almost to big. Even my iMac 24" feels a bit big.

New 24" is a good size.
I still think 30" is probably the limit for a desk monitor (unless one is doing CAD or something). But something that big is out of my league unless I win the lottery or something.

I've got a 24" HP IPS screen at home that I like, but the colors in Winders are wonky due to the larger color gamut. http://www.amazon.co...tor/dp/B001FS1LLI It was around $550 when I got it, IIRC. I hope it lasts a long time.

Enjoy!

Cheers,
Scott.
New Windows 8 lets you calibrate the colours...
...like in OS X.

It comes out a bit weird, TBH. A bit bright and oversaturated for my liking, compared to OS X on the same computer.

I've been through the calibration process a couple of times, with the room light and dark, and the outcome's the same.

Proper hardware calibration required, I think.
New No such thing as too big
The minute I get a monitor that's big enough, I'll just end up with a camera that generates even more megapixels per frame. I'm at 18 now and if I save up the magic money beans for a full-frame back, that'll jump to at least 21.

I like my 27" (2560x1440) for photo work. I'd like more pixels, but not more screens. I'm not a fan of multimonitor setups and have indeed rescinded my extra monitor at work; I'd rather have the desk space.

A single 4K monitor would be great. 8K would be getting on for perfect. Cash donations to the usual address, please.

Here is another setup I though was kind of interesting... for a Macbook Pro.

New Yes there is.
I've encountered it. I work with my monitors sitting at arm's length.

Sitting at arm's length the 23"/24" monitors are *just* to the point where I have to move my head to go side to side to look at everything. This of course is *MY* preference.

I'll take more pixels, but not at a bigger size, just higher density. Don't talk to me about this "Retina" stuff, if you can't distinguish a pixel at "your working distance," then its effectively "Retina" anyway. I also don't really like multi-monitor for a single machine... the XW8400 setup will be my actual first one. Only because I can.

Now sure, sitting 3 meters away from the display... sure, bring on the 55" or 70" 3000+ pixel density. But also give my video at that resolution also... this 1920x1080 crap mapped to higher resolutions is shee and they know it.
