New Fire, Nook, Nexus, other?
We got my father-in-law a Kindle two Christmases ago. He hasn't been using it much lately because it's too hard to get content on it. (Wifi only.)

Mom-in-law wants to get him an upgrade. He accidentally bought a year of Amazon Prime so I'm thinking Kindle Fire.

Opinions?

New I have the original Fire.
It's great as a reader, video player, or (somewhat) game player.

Everything else on it sucks ass: browsing, email, whatever.

I don't know about the latest version though. It's probably faster.

Prime gives you free video (the selection is a bit worse than Netflix) and free rental books each month. Unfortunately you can't get the free rentals on anything other than a Kindle device, or I'd recommend you just get an iPad Mini or Nexus.

Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New In what way is it "hard to get content" on it?
I thought the Kindles used 3G radios (that piggyback on Sprint)... <googlie-goo>

Shows how up on these things I am - they dropped Sprint in 2009.

http://www.amazon.co...let/dp/B0083Q04IQ (scrolldown) has a big table of features, etc.

If the issue is connecting to a network, and 3G being better, then the Fire won't help much (unless you get the $500 one with 4G). If the issue is the Kindle he has doesn't do enough, then the Fire would be a better fit if he is a fan of Amazon and what it offers.

The Fire is basically an Amazon-consumption device.

Does he want to read with it, watch movies, play games, something else? Just something to play with to keep up with the world outside? Are you worried about him accidentally buying lots of movies or games?

Unfortunately, these things that require access to a "store" for updates, etc., are dangerous if you're not as sharp as you used to be. It's very easy to spend lots of money without thinking about it.

I finally had to give up on the idea of a tablet or smart phone for my mom. She's 75 and had a pretty bad stroke a few years ago, so has many physical issues. I think it would help her to stay active and sharp to have something that would keep her occupied (other than watching TV all day), but she doesn't have the dexterity to keep it charged or be able to handle and use it. So, unfortunately, it isn't going to be. I'm sure your FIL isn't in that situation, but don't forget that these things are complex machines and can be frustrating to use without lots of hand-holding at the beginning.

Is an iPad mini an option? Or a used iPad? You can't beat that ecosystem for content right now, and the UI is very well done. It means iTunes and the Apple App store, of course, but such is life.

HTH a little. Good luck.

Cheers,
Scott.
New No 3g ... wifi only
And the UI is beyond tedious.

New My dad uses a Nintendo DS for mental stimulation.
We got him the Brain Training games.

The two biggest issues were that he's left-handed and it didn't ask him that perhaps quite early enough, and the very Nintendo way of dividing informatino into screen after screen after screen after screen. :-)

New I'd say hold off on one of those
until after Jan. when they release the new system. It would suck badly to pick up something and find it not upgradeable. As I understand it, they're supposed to be... but. Also, I have spoken to a friend of mine that works there. I told him I wanted a 14" form factor to go with the 7" (mostly so I can use it for PDFed fake books and the like) and he indicated to me that they've already got the hardware... so I'm expecting that there's going to be lots and lots of stuff getting released 1st quarter 2013.

The 7" will probably be easier to hold for people with arthritis (weight) but the 14" will probably be good for people with coordination issues... hard to say.

Either way, if you're looking for christmas, RIM's not it.
New ah, thx
