Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Meh Pulseaudio...
Friggin Debian.

They are now using PulseAudio by default. Not bad, just friggin a 200+ms lag on any audio. It really is distracting.

This was GREAT until about 2 weeks ago when a new kernel and pulseaudio package came out.

Somehow, they have missed/messed something up. Something in the auto-detect or something.

I fixed it manually when I started reading up on the scheduling and other things related to it.

Change this line:
load-module module-udev-detect

To this line:
load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0

Fershrissake... its a 3 year old fix for TEH LAG.

And Yes, its syncs up everything well now... including Skype, which is where i noticed it. Work had me get a Mic and WebCam for Skype for Customer support and Conference calls.

Yeah, yeah poke me about using Skype... but to be honest call clarity is great, video works, things look great and sound great.

New Dumped pulseaudio a long time ago
Way too many problems. I can't recall exactly what the final straw was, but the main reason was that I could not get Wavecleaner, Rezound and Audacity happy at the same time as long as Pulseaudio was around.
New What are you using...
in place of it? ALSA? ALSA is supposedly deprecated.

Nothing else jumps out at me as something useful.

New Not that I know of
OSS is deprecated and was supplanted by ALSA. ALSA itself is still going but it works closer to the hardware than PulseAudio. The alternative to PulseAudio would be Jack.

At the moment, I do use ALSA only without a higher level sound server. For home use, it works fine.
New Oh yeah...
OSS is deprecated...

ALSA is still in development...

PulseAudio is a sound server.

JackD is also a sound server.

ehhh... I'll just leave it alone for now.

New I can say
that jackd is great, but needs moar dev. I use it for recording via ardour, which is also great. pulseaudio is kind of a pain. I was having some problems with it but mananged to work around them by doing some explicit assigning of devices for clients (read games).

jackd is really good because it can use many backends, including but not limited to alsa. I mostly use it with the ffado backend to connect my focusrite saffire firewire device to record with.
New had two interviews using skype last year
get it log in and get a headset/mike otherwise you will be shouting into the side of your laptop and going "what!what!" during the interview. The first one didn't go well.

New With me, quite the contrary...
I'm using my laptop audio speakers and microphone.

Call clarity is awesome.

If I use the Mic on the Logitech C920 webcam... the call audio clarity is even nicer.

My Skype id is the same as my user here with a "g" in front of it, try it.
