New Anyone integrated a document management system?
Our current application is order-centric, meaning it doesn't deal with "documents" for the most part. We're working on adding some document handling for customers who need to upload attachments.

The requirements quickly reached the point that we realized we're talking document management, and there are systems for this. The problem is all the ones I've looked at treat the DMS as the central tool. What we need is something that we can call from our main app. eg: I'm looking at an "Order" screen, and I want to attach a document to the order.

Anyone seen a system that can do this?

New cgi form handling?
attach a document to an order
create database/blob(empty)
insert upload into blob
save database/blob(full)

New Yeah, that's where we started
Then came the questions:

* What about versions?
* Can users delete them?
* What about categories?
* Archiving?
* PDF conversion?
* Join/split for printing?
* User permissions?
* etc. etc. etc.

New Seriously...
Look at Google Apps and using the APIs.

I think you'll be amazed at its capabilities.
New Need to keep all this internal

New Here you go
The industry has a few, this one is cheaper than some (but still not CHEAP), and will probably do what you want (do the research, it did a boatload 10 years ago, I'm sure it has gotten better/more complex).

Have fun.

New its a blob in a database at that point

New Uh-huh
And there are a lot of things we want to do with it, with a lot of constraints on who can do which of those things to which blobs. Which document management systems already handle.

New I used to write them
But that was almost 2 decades ago. Not much help these days, sorry.

Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New I think you're going to be writing something.
Or paying someone a lot of money to integrate an OTS one with you.

The same thing happens when people want to integrate a CRM with a bespoke customer support tool. The existing "CRM" functions are usually very tightly integrated with the rest of the system (typical of an organically developed system), making adding an OTS CRM quite tricky.

I'm sure I'm not telling you anything new.

Wade.
