New Looks great for free-form stuff.
I certainly wouldn't want to try to type or sign my name in a 3D virtual space. Some things still work best with nearly planar surfaces.

How different is it from that Xbox Kinect thingy, though? Just higher resolution? Won't MS crush them easily if Ballmer wants to?

No, the difference between toy (really, kinect is a toy) and finely tuned usability.
This thing looks usable, kinect ain't.
