The Daily Mail exaggerates to the point of lying. This 'guardian angel' is probably some minor procedure change of night watch but saying they guard sleeping comrades is technically accurate as they only imply night watch is new. The Daily Mail is notorious for its baseless scare tactics. You should simply ignore it.

Guards watching over sleeping guys in the barracks is a little different than perimeter security. And in boot camp, it was to control the cadets, not protect them.
