New Windows links problem
I was using Combofix to clear up a virus on an XP box. It locked up after creating a file that is apparently a link to the system root. It looks like the view from "my computer" including all network drives. It looks like a link, but I haven't been able to find any documentation on Windows links that will cross volume boundaries. I am worried that deleting the link may attempt to delete the everything the link references. Has anybody seen anything like this or have any suggestions?

Thanks.
New Sounds like a cross linked cluster
They used to pop up after failed chkdsk runs. On the other hand, maybe it is a painless "link".

Copy everything to another disk before you start screwing with it.
New Ignore the programmer :)
Sounds like a fucked up junction point.

Grab a copy of the SysInternals tools and see what's going on.

New closer, but not quite.
Combofix created a restore point and left it on the C drive. I ran it again and it cleaned it up. I found the junction point info while I was googling but it said junctions didn't cross volumes, so I didn't investigate further. From the command line, you can't even see the thing. Explorer shows it as a blue icon, rather than a folder symbol. Interesting, but it took care of itself.

Thanks, all.
