Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Nokia Lumia 800
Well, I could resist the siren call no more, and anyway I've comprehensively fucked my Mozart by dropping it twice - the battery door doesn't fit properly, the camera autofocus is completely insane, and I've managed to put a big old scratch in the screen.

Signed on with Orange for 2 years at £26/mo for 600 minutes, unlimited texts, 1GB internet and BT Openzone wifi. (Note for Americans: I don't pay for incoming calls or texts, so 600 minutes is loads and loads and loads).

It's blue. Life is too short to have a black phone when a blue one is available.

I've not been this pleased with a bit of industrial design since I got my iPhone 3G, all those years ago. From the little door that's magnetically held shut, to the not-actually-dead-flat screen, to the fact that there's not a seam or join anywhere on the outer casing, to the elegant tapers at top and bottom - it's the first non-Apple phone I've had where I've felt that someone actually gave two shits about how it looked and, more importantly, felt in the hand.

The screen is a delicious AMOLED affair that, if you know it's pentile, you can tell it's pentile, but if you didn't, you wouldn't care. Really bright, really black. And oleophobic, too, which the HTC most emphatically wasn't. Nokia have done something whereby the stuff you see on the screen seems to be stuck to the surface of the glass, rather than being underneath it. Looks fab.

The OS is WP7.5; an odd little OS that is pretty much universally adored by those who try it, and reviled by those who don't or won't. Anyway, it's slick as snot and looks wonderful.

Camera: 5MP Carl Zeiss with LED flash. Takes pretty decent pictures, and more importantly for a phone camera, is quick to start and take pictures. You can focus and snap by tapping the screen, or use the 2-position camera button to focus and then snap.

External buttons are better placed than on the HTC, and it's much easier to unlock the phone one-handed; the volume rocker, power/lock and camera buttons are all down the right-hand side.

Possible downsides (for other people; I seriously don't care about this shit): non-removable battery, non-expandable 16GB storage.

I've had the phone since Saturday; enjoying it immensely and, as noted above, it's blue.
New Thanks for the report!
New I'm feeling...
pretty badly for your suffering.

Let me know when you wake from your stupor.

Just Kidding.

Anyway, just recently looked at some Windows Phones... seriously looked also.

It just doesn't feel right. Mind you the camera thing is nice, but my Droid-X only has about 2 seconds to picture taking.

Granted, the first thing I noticed is an almost nonexistent "iOS or Android feel" to it, which while very nice and slick and responsive, something to me was "off".

Its much like the same feeling I get with OSX as compared to GTK2 GUIs on Linux and *BSD.

Microsoft hasn't got much of a chance in the SmartPhone Market, but if Windows Phone keep going in this direction... they might at least get really noticed.

RIM on the other hand, even if they woke up and smelled the Coffee... and drank it all and about 25 more pots, it'd be to late and to short.
New Speaking of phones ... need a recommendation
The wife wants a phone for Christmas. I'm getting pretty tired of my crappy-ass dumb phone.

I don't care that I get a smart phone, but something that lets me do text and email reasonably well would be good. Does anyone even care about non-smartphones any more?

New Re: Speaking of phones ... need a recommendation
iOS: Great and most apps, best Mac integration, good email, best for games, slick and colourful UI
WP7: Good apps, decent Mac integration, good email, best for social things, slick and modern UI
Android: Lots of apps, poor Mac integration without 3rd-party software (e.g. iSyncr), colourful UI which can be niggly and fidgety, very tweakable
BlackBerry: Piss-awful apps and selection, good Mac integration, good email, crap for games, crap for social, crap UI. But you can get one with a keyboard. Woot, I think.

Don't be suckered into thinking that "I want to do email therefore I must consider a BlackBerry". Five years ago, all the hype about BB email was true. These days, the email client is no better and arguably worse than everyone else's. And the UI is grim.
New Answers the question, "Anyone care about non-smartphones?"
There are only two features I want in a phone ... other than making calls, of course:

1. Access to maps. Google Maps is fine. GPS is a bonus.

2. Ability to sync my address book.

I discovered with the company-provided BB that even when the device has a GPS receiver it is sometimes disabled by the provider. (Bastards.) But I'm good at reading a map, so that's a minor issue.

And I discovered with the current phone that just because it has a USB port doesn't mean you can actually do anything with it. And it's damn hard to tell from the promotional materials -- and frequently even from the manual -- that the USB is power-only.

I think tomorrow I'll be stopping at the local phone store to try some up-close and personal. I've been avoiding it because all five local outlets ... yes, five, without even going to the mall ... target the urban youth market.

New Verizon is infamous for disabling features.
Witness the report yesterday that they're not supporting Google Wallet.

Your choice may have more to do with your vendor than with the phone itself.

I got my mom a Samsung Epic 4G about a year ago. Keyboard, Android, can do web stuff, etc. It was on Sprint. It seemed to work pretty well. (Past tense because it seems to have walked off somewhere.) I never tried 4G with it.

http://wireless.amaz...nt/dp/B003ZDO2H6/

Sprint is pretty good in some areas, and did well in the recent Consumer Reports survey, but seems to have the slowest 3G at the moment. Verizon seems to have the best network, but is up to its old tricks. J is on a cheap Verizon plan that doesn't include text messages. She gets frequent SMS spam that she has to pay for because Verizon won't block them. :-/ AT&T is GSM (yay!) but has crap infrastructure and drops calls (boo!). Maybe Virgin or Cricket or some of the other tiny providers are better in some respects, but they piggyback on the big guys' networks, so they can't fix that.

Maybe pick a provider, grab a recent phone off eBay, activate it on your existing plan (you should be able to do so without a new contract, I think), and see how you like it. If you don't like it, rinse and repeat. If you really like it, change your plan to enable the fancy features if necessary.

HTH. Good luck!

Cheers,
Scott.
New ^^^ What he said.
Though, if Google Wallet is a deal breaker for you for Verizon... then AT&T is also a deal breaker, since they have CRAP for service.

Seriously you need to just goto the Store and look at the Android Phones. I've not noticed any "niggly/fidgety" stuff on it. My DroidX is getting to be 18 months old.

My DroidX is very good at doing just about anything. GPS and Google Maps included. It has a "CARDOCK" mode, but can be manually activated with the CARDOCK app.

It really works nice, used it on my motorcycle trip and paired it to my in-helmet headset. I could call from it and listen to GPS and music if I wanted. It was very pleasant.

All these millions of apps, you just have to try them and use the ones you want.. eventually you'll stop playing the "games" of installing testing and removing and you'll find the ones you want.

Personally: Amazon Kindle App, Google Authenticator, Google Books, Barcode Scanner, ConnectBot, GMail, Google Goggles, Google Maps, Picasa, Flickr, Navigation (from Cardock Mode), Google Earth, text messaging and the Web Browser are pretty much all I use... Facebook and Google+ integration in near automagic, so they don't really count as an app to me. I don't use twitter, period.

My only problem is with the younger set, they always are seemingly going over the 5GB/month limit... glad we got our plan before the 5G limit went into place.
New Android == malware
The app quality is all over the place. Say what you like about a walled garden but there are definite benefits.

Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New I can agree to some extent.
Just as with any market in the real world, you just don;t by stuff willy nilly and use/consume it right?

Just make sure you understand what you are looking for and what you want. My 2.3 android OS is stellar and works a treat for me. There are reports coming that Ice Cream Sandwich (v4) is coming to my phone in an over the air update.

So... we shall see what comes of it.
New I stayed away from Verizon for that reason
Well, not Wallet per se, but the fact that I had to pay an extra fee to use Bluetooth with my Samsung. Uh, no.

I have AT&T. Dropped calls almost invariably happen right at the start, or I get a failed call. Very annoying but not fatal.

Verizon has better connectivity in the sticks (I have an iPad with Verizon service).

AT&T has the worst customer service but to be honest I've never used it so I wouldn't know. The web site application is utter 100% ass. Seriously, it's fully of donkey juice. It will mostly get the job done but at the end you'd almost rather go back to Yahoo's new email interface.
Regards,
-scott
Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New You want GPS. You may just not know it.
I'm really good with maps as well, but there's nothing quite like being able to carry around a map with a moving location marker when you're on foot. We did a lot of looking at colleges this year and GPS means campus walking made easy, particularly given how bad most campus maps are.

I had a shite non-smart phone, work gave me a Blackberry. There was great joy, for sufficiently "woo, email on the go, and no more missing meetings" values of joy. Everything else was crap. Then I got an iPhone 2, missed the little keyboard for a few days, and never looked back. Visual voice mail was a game changer over "press 1 to hear your messages". Note: I had an old BB, I haven't used a touch or any of the other newfangled ones.

I've got an 8520 Curve for work.

Every time I use it, it's like a little visit to 2005, when smartphones were ass.

Do they hire drunken idiots as VPs?

New Hmm ...
I'm really trying to get away from multi-year contracts, and Verizon in particular. I hate that I can't tell until I've signed the contract and got the phone what's going to be disabled.

But that phone looks just about perfect.

And all the phones in the store are set up with all the optional upgrades.

My work phone had GPS. Verizon remotely disabled it. If you wanted it to work, it cost an extra $4.95/month. Bastards.

New My Family plan...
with 5 phones with a $120/month network fee, plus a $9.99 per phone per month fee, plus my smart phone $29.99 data plan gives me everything enabled except Wallet... since Verizon has their own plans for a wallet and wants to be the bank.

So, for $120, plus (2 x $29.99 data plan) + (5 x $9.99 phones fees) == $229.93 total, plus surcharges and taxes and other bull.

Total per phone without Data plan (with unlimited text messages) == $33.99 per month.

Plus, $7/month per smartphone and $4/month per non-smartphone for comprehensive coverage to replace phones.

Not including acquisition of, $149 x 2 for DroidX, $35 x 3 for other non-smart phones. $403 due at contract inception. $100 total rebate given to bill... after the first month, brought it effectively to $303. Ehhh.
New Yeah, family plans help the average
I'm going to look at the month-to-month phones at the store tomorrow. $45/mo unlimited phone, text, internet; $55/mo for smartphone. They have a family plan, but not for smartphones. The selection of phones they have online is pretty meager, I'm betting they'll have more in the store.

New Updates etc
Camera isn't 5MP, it's 8.

Phone comes with a very well-fitting colour-coded case. Call quality is stellar; some of the best I've ever heard. Radio performance is really good - but then, you'd expect that, with the casing being polycarbonate, not metal.

Bluetooth works great with the car, and it'll stream music, make calls from the address book and recent calls list, and read out your texts (and let you speak the replies).

Nokia Drive is a good turn-by-turn navigation app that doesn't need a data connection (it has pre-downloaded maps). It's not as feature-rich as, say, TomTom, but when it comes to navigating from here to there, it gets shit done.

Will this be the phone that saves Nokia and WP7? Dunno. It's selling really well here in Yoo Rop, but you lot are weird, and can be sold all sorts of awful shitty phones, so who knows what will happen.
New Yeah, well ...
Because of the cost to get (close to) nationwide coverage, we don't have many players. Instead of competing on features, they compete on how much they can fuck their customers without them switching.

New Re: Yeah, well ...
Is buying sim-free and then just grabbing a sim-only contract not an option?
New Nope. Not here.
A SIM card just means you can swap phones easier here. Non-phone included contracts are crazy. Non-contract phones are even more crazy...

Least crazy is Phone included on contract plans.
New That's fucked /UP/
New Yes it is.
New Wait until you hear the ones about health insurance...
New Don't get me started...
My Ear surgery total cost before "insurance company negotiations" was over $65,000.

After negotiations... just about $37,000.

I still ended up having to pay $5,000 for my High Deductible... plus 20% after that, PLUS my monthly premium is $2278 for the family (reimbursed from the company).

SO... this year, Molly had a second nasal surgery for about $15,000 pre-negotiated fee. $5,000 for her deductible plus 20% of left over $10,000.

Molly == $5,000 + $2,000 == $7,000
Greg == $5,000 + $6,400 == $11,400
Karen == $3,700 (not reached $5,000 this year) == $3,700

Monthly Premiums == $2,278 x 12 == $27,336

My total health care costs, for my employer and myself == $49,436

That doesn't include Medications. Which for Molly was $2,700 this year (for Psycho-psychotic meds) and for me my Diabetic meds and "supplies" was $970.

Schweet... and people wonder why health care is my hot button!

And they (Aetna) are still cheaping out on things like medications. Refusing to cover cough syrup and an inhaled steroid for my bronchitis... costing me more money.

Another year like this, being the 2nd in a row as last year Karen had multiple ER visits and Gall Bladder Removal Surgery, finally when they figured it out. Molly had her first Nasal surgery last year (and) Molly had a "non-covered procedure" last year for $12,000, still paying off Mom and Dad for that)... and I'll have to file bankruptcy if we get a third one.

New Yikes. :-(
New Karen is going in for...
Uterine Bleeding and thickening of the Endometrium. She is not post-menopausal.

Ultrasound picked up some "heavier spots"

Feck me...

This already is costing $1800 for the Ultrasound and the pre-screening and a biopsy. Looks to be about $3500 for the tests and biopsy of the "spots"...

Great. Bankruptcy here I come.
New Hang in there. Best of luck to her.

New ^What he said, man. That is rough.
New Well... at this point...
She is bleeding enough to saturate 8 "overnight" pads a day, plus running down her legs at any given point.

We might be visiting the Emergency Room this weekend, if it doesn't slow down at all. Got new meds yesterday... slowed it down about 1/4.
New Don't put off getting her checked out.
The symptoms sound similar to what my mom went through.

It was a long time ago, but hysterectomy was the treatment in her case.

Hang in there, and best wishes.

New Its slowed down... thankfully.
Its down to about 2 a day now.

Plus the urgency isn't there now.

Tuesday can't come soon enough.
New And of course I just sent that email asking for time
Don't worry about it, it'll sit.
New I already replied.
New Those premiums are insane
How big is your company?
Regards,

Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New SMALL.
We are down to 11 people now. $2,278 is the cost for here in Michigan, which is about $200 more per employee than in all other states. That is the entire benefits package, including dental and life insurance... but the bulk of the $2,278 (about $2,125) is for health coverage.

(putting on my speculation goggles)
If things keep going the way they are, we are probably going to drop one or two more in the next couple of months. Perhaps 3 total in the next year.
(taking off my speculation goggles)

This economy is killing our customers and through them, us. Many of our large customers have been downsizing a lot as well. Some of our small customers have just withered away. Not a lot of new small customers coming and staying due to the complexity of actually DOING daily batching, caseload, "wealth" forecasting, bulk e-mail management and other things, we are PCI compliant and that makes people and passwords very cumbersome, since its required to be at least a certain length and have certain characteristics but not others. We do complete backups and don't lose data even when the customer deletes large section of the data and files. We have a routine for maintenance and how its handled. We do scanning, internally and externally (required by PCI). We have a really DEEP API feature set that includes things NONE of our competitors even comes close to offering. Small customers want it all to just be, without the work... but all the features. Hey Data, support and direction has to come from somewhere... its not going to come from Magical Unicorn Farts and just be there!

We don't drink or offer Kool-aid, we stand on our merits and core values... its hurting us to be morally and ethically upright. Many of our customers wanted us to be a "non-profit" so we became one, being owned by a foundation, its not helping, in fact some (of the very same ones) now see it as a hindrance. Also, many competitors are in their 5th re-write from the ground up using different technologies... our stuff is fast, it works awesomely, has depth. We just don't tell people what they want to hear, so they'll buy and then fail to deliver. We tell them straight out of the gate, our stuff rocks, when the upfront work is done.

There are other things that really hit us hard, people being in different Cities around the US and Canada. Labor Compliance is difficult. Taxes and staying abreast of changes pertinent to us are difficult in 6 States plus a Province in Canada.

Its just getting to the point where its tough being SaaS and SaaS only. Many organizations, we are finding want a PACKAGE Deal, with full marketing, fulfillment, direct mail, printing and publishing, electronic marketing (FB, Twitter, analytics, SEO, Web hosting, Easy button, etc...) , data management and reporting, product development, events direction and many other pieces, all in one place.

Ahh... heck, I don't know.

NOTICE to certain persons here, you know whom you are:
Please just keep a lid on this... no need to mention this to the 5 or more friends we have in common.
New Yikes indeed
Similar plan, but at least our deductible is only 2500/head.
New That's why I haven't weighed in.
Aussie providers have both the ACMA and the Ombudsman breathing down their necks if they get too customer-hostile. And both of those have teeth. And we went GSM earlier than the US so sneaky tricks don't happen much. Basically, no-one wants to be the first to screw the customer down. SIM-only contracts are easy to get here and it's even okay to buy import phones - the carriers don't like it, but they aren't allowed to complain.

My current phone is a HTC Desire, subsidised by Telstra. Prior to that I had a HTC Hero bought outright and retail. Because of the latter market, contract phones Down Unda are only lightly customised. AFAIK there's nothing my Desire can't do that HTC originally provided.

Wade.
Static Scribblings http://staticsan.blogspot.com/
New They do that to get...
The people that don't like contracts.

Mainly though they do that because of the people that have bad credit and can't get a contract and are able to get them both ways.

No Contract == Month to Month which is typically 20-30% more expensive

No Contract == non-subsidized Phone, which is big bucks at full retail.

For instance, my DroidX at full retail was $549. Month to Month "access fee" $10/month. Monthly average minutes/text/dataplan for a smartphone from Verizon is about $70/month plus surcharges and tax... etc.

AT&T is no better, Sprint just introduced one price month to month but I don't recall the price... dunno about the rest.

Except some carriers/specialist phone sellers like "Boost" caters to those that can't get contracts... they have plans starting at $40/month, period, including unlimited minutes/text/data... but man the phone sucks and its not a smart-phone. Get a *real* smartphone and the prices go up quite a bit. The cost is still based on your credit score, though... which means extra dollars for those not able to get a contract in the first place!
New Re: They do that to get...
Compare and contrast:

I just finished with a 1-month rolling sim-only contract with 3 (www.three.co.uk).

I'd bought the HTC 7 Mozart for £350ish off Amazon, signed up with 3.

100 minutes, 3000 texts, 1GB data. £10/mo. Can tether, etc.

You guys really do get done up the arse with no lube, don't you?
New It's the Magic of the Marketplace! :-/
New Yes...
VERY MUCH SO!

Hell Internet Service Providers take bundling to a whole new level recently... charging you more if you don't have one of the "services"...

With Comcast (Xfinity), if you don't have Voice (Voip phone) or Internet ar basic cable... the costs are $7-9 each, more per month.

Huh, how much does Comcast Voice cost??? $14-$18 a month more. I still ain't gonna have it. I guess they figure people always have Cable and Internet, so why not force them to get Voice... feh.
New And worse service
Try to get internet only and Comcast will only give you 4 Mb/s instead of the 6 you get with cable (for about ~95% of the bundle price.)
New sorry for you who are stuck with Comcast (Xfinity)
Comcast (Xfinity) just SUCKS

I pay $336.00 a month for fios and for that I get
cable (like 500 channels 100 in HD)
Internet 50 MB up and down
Phone VOIP ( with more then I now what to do with)
HD mult room DVR + HD box
and router with wifi
and add my
Cell phone (450 talk, 250 text, 2GB Internet)
MIFI with 5GB Internet
