They don't care
They can do anything with their email they want, interfacewise, as long as they don't lose the data. Too many people do NOT want to change their email addresses.

Yahoo dorked around with their interface so much that my wife finally switched away from them.

In the long run, they can't afford not to.
Look at Google Plus. Remember the inside post about what was wrong with it and comparing it to Amazon? It hurt because Google Plus doesn't have enough of a userbase. Gmail does, which doesn't make it immume from this, it just has a bigger buffer.
There is a pain threshold to changing your email address. Make it too painful to stay and people will switch. Google need to be mindful of that. Wade. Static Scribblings http://staticsan.blogspot.com/
