New Win98 - Samba issue: 3 directories max depth on share
We've got a SkilSaw handful of systems here running Windows98 or pre, also noted the issue on MS WinME.

None of these systems can browse our Samba fileserver particularly well. Most are limited to a maximum directory depth of three -- going beyond this results in an error message -- which I'd love to share right now but we're getting an even lower-level one:
Network Neighborhood

Unable to browse the network.

The network is not accessible.
For more information, look in the Help Index at the topic 'Network
Troubleshooter'.
Similarly, accessing a file when three directories deep into a tree -- and often a level or two up. Other MS Windows systems (NT, 2K, XP) have no issues on the same paths and files. We've ruled out permissions issues. I've done some cursory Googling with no results.

Samba is version RH RPM sambas-2.2.1a-4 running on RH 7.2.

Any ideas/experience with this one?

New Ew! No ideas, only a hunch.
Are they directories with longish names? There might be some limitation on the length of a pathname or something like that. Just a hunch though. Don't think I've ever had cause to access something more than three levels deep via samba, sorry.
On and on and on and on,
and on and on and on goes John.
New Um. Well
...they're long names, as in, not just 8.3. But not freakin' ginormeous.

New Serious guess...
What is your environment space in the DOS based systems??? If it doesn't default to 1024 or larger you are going to run into these kinds of problems that are unexplainable and intermittent.

Also your "PATH"... if it s too long, especially if the path is modified by the login script, will cause oddities...

That "Only show 2GB free Limit" in Samba should be set too, that spins the head of MS DOS based Operating Systems if not set... Even today.

Looking at other things too... Will follow up when I get into work and do some reading...

New Need to know...
There is just too much info not available for me to narrow.

If you could put the Daemons into Debug Level 3 we can get some good error messages or even just plain ole "what's" happening. Don't go higher as it WILL slow them down significantly.

Waiting with baited breath... (exactly what kind of bait... dunno)

New You got me fair and square - "hook, line, and sinker..." :-)
New Actually it's OK . .

New The smattering of things...
min protocol = CORE (default)
max protocol = NT1 (default)

CORE is need for early version of WfW stuff carried through 95. LANMAN1 was the first to support long-name space.
LANMAN2 was better
NT1 is current and is commonly called CIFS.

max disk size = 1000 (default = 0 or unlimited)

Doesn't mean you can't write more info... just that if the clients ever ask... that's all she wrote... usually some programs (including Windows 9X) can sometimes have fits with huge disks.

That is it till I get more info from you.
