New solving this problem vs matter of principle
Keynesian thinking says we need to spend more to solve the current problem. Liberals think the government needs to do more in the current crisis to help people. Neither are calling for simply increasing government spending as a matter of principle, instead both believe that the current crisis requires more government spending.

The economic right wing believes as a matter of principle that the government should spend less. This is how they can suggest tax cuts and lower spending when the economy is down to encourage growth, and suggest tax cuts and lower spending when the economy is up to reward success. If you try to pin them down on what level of spending they actually believe is right for the government, they get evasive, because many are essentially Ayn Rand libertarians in disguise and their goal is $0.
