New Correlation is not cause...
Regards,
-scott
Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New Yup.
There's a reason (probably many reasons) why the body has evolved over millions of years to make the stuff that floats around in our bloodstream. Simple correlations between seeing one thing in one test with some disease or syndrome doesn't mean that one is the result of the other.

The human body is extremely complicated. While we've got to start somewhere in figuring out treatments, we (and especially the press) need to recognize that there's more that we don't know than we do.

Cheers,
Scott.
New What we know:
Drain all the blood out, the body will die.

What we don't know:

Everything else.

Take saturated fats - once the great and absolutely certain diet demon, and still condemned as such by the AHA (which hasn't been right about anything yet). To quote the recent conclusions of an international expert panel on saturated fats, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition:

"We do not yet have enough evidence to give dietary recommendations for individual SFAs, but the evidence is useful for advising food manufacturers, eg. stearic acid can be used as a replacement for trans fatty acids where appropriate, although the evidence is not sufficient to determine whether it is superior to other SFAs because multiple pathways may be involved and clear data on clinical endpoints are not available."

In other words, "We really don't know a damned thing".

New So ...
We don't know enough to tell you what you should eat, but that won't stop us from telling manufacturers what they should sell you.

Okay, got it, thanks.
