New wonder how krugman is going to spin this
Standard & Poor's on Monday downgraded the outlook for the United States to negative, saying it believes there's a risk U.S. policymakers may not reach agreement on how to address the country's long-term fiscal pressures.

how long did it take Ireland to go from triple A to junk?

New It's the attack of the invisible bond vigilantes

HTH.

Oh, the DJIA is now at a ~3 year high after the doom-and-gloom on Monday "caused" by S&P's report.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Aren't stocks and bonds contrary indicators anyway?
I thought what's good for stocks tends to be bad for bonds and vice-versa. This news was allegedly bad for the bond market, so they shouldn't have been reporting on moves in stocks in any case, but if they did report stocks in connection with this announcement, they should say the move indicates strength in the bond market.

Second, S&P didn't reveal any original research or information, just their conclusion based on the same info everyone else already had. The only reason to care what they say is if they have a good track record. Let's see ... housing bubble, Enron, Bear Stearns, Lehman ... yeah, not so great.

New All good points.
I think the movement in US stock prices on Monday was mainly another indication that day-to-day prices have almost nothing to do with fundamentals of the stock or the company in question. It's all about trying to be ahead of everyone else in a trade, not investing for the long(ish) term.

I also thought it was very strange that the news stories were pointing to the stock market when it should have been the bond market reacting if there was anything new and important in the S&P report. There wasn't, of course.

Cheers,
Scott.
New you just figured that out? sheesh

New Connect the dots.
We've known that the PIIGS have been in trouble and will continue to be in trouble for a long time. The Euro constrains what they can do to get out of it.

What does that have to do with the S&P warning?

After following their version of RepubliCANTS and severely cutting spending, their economy has been in the dumper for 2 years now. That's what American RepubliCANTS want for America.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from."

Great food here as well
In fact, after two visits in 2009, it’s easy to conclude that Houston has one of the most satisfying food scenes in the country right now. Best of all? Things are just getting started.
http://www.nypost.co...6gc9vjrUrwdOc0XpN
in the years since I left Houston, where I grew up, it’s gone from a city where the high-end restaurants were as gilded as they were mostly mediocre to a place with a world-class food scene

Houstonians eat out more than residents of any other city.

- former home to the original starting airport for MS Flight Simulator (Meigs Field)
- golfing capital of the USA measured in number of courses per capita
