How to quiet a noisy PSU fan?
I see lots of forum posts about the fans spinning up and sounding like a jet engine, but that's not what I'm getting. Mine have a slight rattle, like a fan is unbalanced.
I haven't pulled the PSU yet to blow it out, since it's the one piece of a G5 that's not easy to get to, but I'd like to know if it's possible to replace just the PSU fan before I go pulling it.

It might be easy once you get to it...
Depending on how it's mounted, it might be easy. There's usually a peel off label on one side of the fan. Just peel it off and drop in a drop of fairly thick oil (e.g. Motor oil). Spin it around a little, stick the sticker back on, and you should be good to go.
But with the hassle in getting to that point, you might just want to replace it. Assuming you can get a part number or equivalent before you start the disassembly.
HTH. Good luck.
Cheers,
Scott.

Re: How to quiet a noisy PSU fan?
The rattling sound usually means the rotor is bouncing off its stops. I have found no cure for this except a new fan. Fans are cheap and easily available for PCs, and easy to replace (Power Supply fans need a little soldering of the leads), but I don't know about Macs - Apple likes proprietary everything.

Re: Oh, MOST excellent, thanks!
The little pin the holds the CPU cover on is a biatch.
The top will not come up easily. You need push up the thing from the back of it as its a push in and lock setup. You will need a long stiff item with a slight bend.

Kick it
I usually just kick the side of my tower till it rebalances and quiets down.
