Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Microsoft and NC State.
You will not hear this from another source.

On Saturday October 23rd, A couple of Charlotte LUG members and I went to North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC to see a Linux installfest. We are planning to have one in Charlotte in a couple months and no one had ever seen one. There were Red Hat guys there and in fact we got a tour of Red Hat's new building on what is called NC State's Centennial Campus. The University actually has no facilities on this campus. It's more of an incubator office park for entrepreneurs. The 4-story office building, originally built by Lucent before they collapsed in major way, was quite nice. Free sodas and snacks for employees, a gym, nice (Lucent purchased) cubes, nice cafeteria, etc. It beats the warehouse they had in Durham, NC, which I never did see.

The Microsoft part, is what they did after Red Hat was "allowed" on campus. They told the University Microsoft would no longer provide any free software "donations". Truth be told, such donations are written off at market prices while costing Microsoft peanuts. "No problem", Microsoft was told, "most of the software was not used by the University and was given away to students, anyway." You've got to love that.

New Clarification
...was that "no problem, we're not going to allow Red Hat on campus, and we're (the University) going to keep getting software bribes from Microsoft", or "no problem, we're going to let RH on campus, and fsck you and the PoS gratis software you're shovelling at us, that we don't use anyway"?

New Re: Clarification
It's the latter, i.e. "Bug off, who needs you?"

New I couldn't resist . .
. . puting it up on my [link|http://www.aaxnet.com/news/M020331.html|Web site]. Since I haven't seen any quotes from involved University officials, I attributed it to "informed sources".

New Some references

Add Linux (an open-source operating system) as a supported desktop choice at NC State.

Also, note who gets [link|http://www.ncsu.edu/it/open_source/|top billing] for open source as a local compnay at NCSU.

New Oh, so it's much more serious . . .
. . than just letting Red Hat into their industrial park. I may need to make some adjustments.

New Speaking of references, Andrew, in your...
...CRM piece (IIRC), you say something along the lines of "I said two yers ago that Microsoft was going to buy Great Plains..." [though it could be that you spelled it "Great Planes"] -- wouldn't it be even more impressive if you turned that phrase into a link to the page where you actually said that?

Of course, who am I to point fingers? I'm in the "Information Technology" business, prima facia evidence that there's bats in the bell tower.

New I do have a reference elsewhere on the site . .
. . not to the earliest, but one that was easy to find, I think to a ZDNet talk-back. I'll get it on this one in a bit. Thanks for the suggestion.
