Welcome to IWETHEY!

New It's ext3.
It only happens to Opera and gets worse when it's working with a lot of email (I have some 8000 messages in my mailbox). Everything else is still responsive, although sometimes it happens when I'm doing a Java compile. I installed smartmontools and both drives are fine.

/var/log/syslog and messages are silent on HD timeouts or anything else except the flashplugin occasionally barfing.

Q:Is it proper to eat cheeseburgers with your fingers?
A:No, the fingers should be eaten separately.
New Is this a laptop or a desktop machine?
If its a Desktop, decrease you dirty_writeback_centisecs to 3 seconds (or less but not lower than 1 second)

echo 300 > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs

If its laptop... you want to only do that should you be plugged in.

If its a laptop change it to 15 seconds when on battery.

I know that Ubuntu has been playing with "standard" numbers on trying to be GREEN. You might have it up there already. My Debian installs all have it at 5 seconds (500 centisecs)

New It's a desktop.
There's always more information to give... :-)

It's a Dell Optiplex 960. Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @ 2.83GHz. 8Gb of RAM but some is stolen for the onboard video. 2x 300Gb SATA HDDs. And uname-a returns "2.6.32-25-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 19:52:42 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux". All the developers have machines like that, except almost everyone runs Vista or Windows 7. I have Vista in a VirtualBox for corporate networking, but I only really need it for the Outlook calendar.

The dirty_writeback_centisecs was 499, so I lowered it to 300.
