New I thought Fannie and Freddie weren't subsidised?
I thought Fannie and Freddie enjoyed lower borrowing rates because it was believed that Congress would bail them out if something went wrong, even though this was never stated, giving them a huge advantage in the prime market. Wall Street then created subprime because it was a market Fannie and Freddie wouldn't touch. Fannie and Freddie were pretty much forced to go into subprime.
