New Can two PCs communicate via 802.11 w/out a router?
I'm looking for a new desktop that I can do video editing on. I've found one that has 802.11, a TV tuner and HDMI output. I've already got a new flatscreen hidden downstairs for Christmas, so there will be a ton of room behind it in the entertainment center.

I'm thinking I might put the new desktop down in the living room. If I want to work on the laptop on the couch while someone is watching TV, would I be able to communicate directly with the desktop system, or will I have to connect through the router?

New You can by setting up an Ad Hoc network
New Yes. Two ways...
Do AdHoc networking. Sometimes its a bugger to get working right.

Make the desktop a WAP (Wireless Access Point). Of course the Desktop will have to have wired then.

But then you'll have the Wireless Network your way... and know how to make it happen at any time you want. Then you just connect to the desktop on its regular IP Address.

Plus you get wireless browsing as a bonus.
New Hmm ... maybe
Right now there's no phone jack near the TV, and I'm still using DSL. If I switch to cable broadband then it'll be easier. Until then, I'll probably leave the router upstairs in the office.
