Swallowing the merchandise is a well known smuggling tactic so it would be entirely plausible if AQ claims to have adopted it. All they need to do is use the rear insertion variant, and then have one volunteer try to set said rear on fire once airborne.

failing does more damage than succeeding.

If the shoe bomb had gone off, we'd have lost one plane. As it is, the process is changed more or less forever.

Colon bomb goes off, one plane. Colon bomber gets caught, that pretty much screws aviation until further notice.
