Welcome to IWETHEY!

New My Opteron at home seems more stable now.
It's been up idling for a few days without me doing anything to it. Before my recent changes, it would lock up as quickly as a couple of hours after booting.

What did I change?

Nothing in the PC chassis.

I replaced the UPS batteries (Cyberpower 1500AVR). I needed to do it ages ago (uptime on a power outage was a few milliseconds), but only got around to it a few days ago. Dunno if that was really the cause, but it's the only significant thing I've changed.

(I did also move my Lexmark E234 laser printer to a different outlet, but it was not plugged into the UPS, and the PC would lockup even if the printer wasn't used.)

What's funny is that our Power Mac G5 was also plugged into the same UPS and never had these lockup problems. Maybe the UPS had nothing to do with it...

Gremlins? I dunno.

In any event, so far the Win2k Opteron system seems stable again.

Cheers,
Scott.
New If it does act up again...
... symptoms sound like a dodgy CPU/heatsink contact.
New ^^^ What he said!
I've seen much of that.
New Thanks, both.
I hadn't replied because I was waiting for it to act up again. It's been very stable.

One bit of information I have left out is that I was getting some occasional motherboard utility warnings/beeps over the past year or so about some fan spinning too slowly, but every time I looked at the fan speed it was fine, and I've never seen a high CPU temperature on it. Perhaps there is an intermittent cooling issue, though. (While I still haven't opened the case after replacing the UPS batteries, the PC remains out from under the desk and closer to an air register. Perhaps that additional cooling is masking the problem.)

I'll keep an eye on it and report back if I have any more information.

Thanks again.

Cheers,
Scott.

The simplest explanation is that I'm an idiot!
