Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Has anybody tried upgrading ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04?
I'd kind of like to be able to use the newer Open Office and Eclipse packages, but I'm worried about trashing my current installation. They claim it should upgrade automatically, but I've had about a 50/50 success rate in the past :-\
Has anybody been successful or seen any gotchas? Does Ubuntu still dislike Nvidia video cards?
Thanks for any suggestions.
New Kinda sorta.
I had Kubuntu 8.04 on my P7120D laptop that I had been keeping updated with the GUI update tool. It offered to upgrade to 10.04, but I wanted to move to Ubuntu instead. I couldn't figure out how to do it (I didn't want to just change the desktop in case there were nagging issues), so I bit the bullet and did a new install from the CD.

It is working very, very well. Some problems with DHCP, but I think that's my WAP/router issue (I just manually gave it a fixed IP address, DNS, etc.).

HTH a little.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Try a smaller partition on the tail of your disk
Dual boot for a bit, make sure your previous docs are accessible.

With enough space, you might decide to keep this method of access. I like to keep previous isolated versions around as long as possible.
New Re: Has anybody tried upgrading ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04?
I don't use Ubuntu.

Straight Debian Sid(Unstable) user here.

For me, the Auto-Config of X breaks everything I use, even in Debian. Ubuntu installs the proprietary stuff for nVidia... but still crashes horribly for me, so I have to boot it in regular CL mode and de-install nVidia and force new election.

Of course, I'm not a simple user.
New Yes, but not directly.
I always upgrade to the immediate next version. A few times I've gone through two upgrades in a few hours. To go from 8.04 to 10.04 will take a while to do that way, though, and you'll be downloading maybe 1.5Gb of files along the way.

If the GUI upgrader lets you go straight to 10.04, I'd say it can probably be trusted. I've not seen it botch an upgrade.

Wade.

Q:Is it proper to eat cheeseburgers with your fingers?
A:No, the fingers should be eaten separately.
New It did botch one of mine
and laziness made we wipe and replace. I, too, have one of the aforementioned nvidia chipset cards and it blew up the display manager, so I did a fresh install to 10.

I don't have alot of customization that I don't mind redoing. All my data is stored on other drives and I do keep windows partition to use tversity...since mediatomb isn't all the way there yet for streaming to ps3 (its getting better...but transcoding on the fly makes it much easier with tversity)
Sure, understanding today's complex world of the future is a little like having bees live in your head. But...there they are.
New I have an nvidia card too
in one of my boxen. The 8-9 upgrade blew up, but the 9-10 upgrade went fine.
New I was trying 8 to 10...was hopeful.
I had heard of problems with the migration for nvidia cards...and held off. Also had backups, etc.

As I said, I didn't mind too much starting fresh...and I like 10. Seems to be working well.

New Thanks, all.
Since I have all my job hunting material on this machine, I think that caution will prevail. I'm planning on picking up a spare disk which I can mount and dd the 8.04 partition into a save file on it. Then I can try the upgrade and if it crashes badly, I can bring up a live disk and dd the 8.04 partition back. I'm not positive that dd would be better than tar so I might want to play around a little before doing anything potentially disastrous.
