Cray-1 pulled around 250 MFLOPS; my iMac does 38GFLOPS. So I've got about 150 Cray-1s on my desk.

When you say it like that, it seems a bit excessive; all that computer power just to look at boobies on the internet.
New I think technology has improved a little bit
in the last 28 years. The Cray-1 was discontinued in 1982.

Still, an interesting comparison.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from."

New It is widely accepted...
... that the most basic mobile phone has more computing power than the Apollo 11 LEM. :-)

Wade.

Q:Is it proper to eat cheeseburgers with your fingers?
A:No, the fingers should be eaten separately.
New And the final computer backup on the early shuttles
was a Hewlett-Packard programmable calculator carried in one astronaut's pants pocket.

New I can believe it.
I have to say one of the most underplayed scenes in the movie 'Apollo 13' was where Lovell (Tom Hanks) was recalculating a mess of vectors for re-aligning their craft whilst enroute back to earth. Lovell did the six calculations correctly in the same time six men in Mission Control did one each. :-O

To the discerning viewer, that explained why it was Lovell who was in the space craft.

Wade.

Edit: fixed the names as I'd badly mis-remembered them.
