Will the alias apply when it's called by something else?
Specifically, I have wget set as the downloader for Firefox. When Firefox calls it, will it use the alias from my bashrc?

Which ever alias...
is in force when you first login.
Remember changes to environment *REQUIRE* a re-log.
Since X does't particularly care about your .bashrc in your home dir... it only reads the global env.
