'Historic' day as first non-Latin web addresses go live

Arab nations are leading a "historic" charge to make the world wide web live up to its name.

Net regulator Icann has switched on a system that allows full web addresses that contain no Latin characters.

Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are the first countries to have so-called "country codes" written in Arabic scripts.

The move is the first step to allow web addresses in many scripts including Chinese, Thai and Tamil.

More than 20 countries have requested approval for international domains from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann).

It said the new domains were "available for use now" although it admitted there was still some work to do before they worked correctly for everyone. However, it said these were "mostly formalities".

Neat, and long overdue.

But I'm sure the spammers are twiddling their mustaches over this - an even better way to obscure sources. "Honey, are you expecting e-mail from ©8™Ǔ®?"

New Non-starter for spam IMO
Easiest filter in the world to write. I don't speak any languages that don't use Latin characters. If the domain isn't Latin characters, I can't read what's on it, block it.

New And already written...
It just has to be enabled in the spam scanning engine configs.
New Speaking of filiters
My newsletter fairly regularly gets bounced because of "misspelling" in the subject line. It's called an abbreviation, people. Key on misspellings in the body, but subject lines are like Tweets: people routinely abbreviate so the recipient can see the whole subject in their typically-shortened inbox view.

we have large swathes of non latin customers. Orange county for example
If we torture the data long enough, it will confess. (Ronald Coase, Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences, 1991)
New mail will be problematic for a while
we are just starting to address this in the DKIM WG so the software is a year or two behind. SPAM can be hashed so the spam vendors should be okay unless they send it all in another language but unless they have before and after pictures of the girth and length joe befuzznick wont get it or click on the order form
