New Will this HDD adapater work with Linux?
http://www.circuitci...249952&CatId=3770

I've got a new HDD, but the PC is a slimline so it can only have one internal drive. I want to connect the old drive just long enough to copy everything off. Will kits like this work under Linux?

New Should..
While I haven't transferred files from a *nix partition; did so from a Doze one on same HD. Used similar to prep some 2.5" drives for a Notebook. Everyone needs one of these in the kit.

For the paranoid / general insurance of out-of-box goodness:
If you have a decent meter, I'd check that the 12V/ 1A PS is copacetic -- close to 12.0 AND, on AC-range, just check that ripple is in the low-milliVolts. Cheap reassurance that a drive full of irreplaceable pix of that hovering UFO isn't fried by a (unlikely) transformer short to 120 VAC.

I.
New It should. I've used a similar box without issues.
AFAIK, those boxes don't care about the OS - but see below.

http://www.newegg.co...226-001-_-Product

Reviews are uneven, but I've never had trouble with it with a drive that was recognized by the OS.

Some complain that there can be issues as that particular one "doesn't support the full ATA spec". Also someone mentions needing to update smartmontools - http://www.newegg.co...=1&Keywords=linux

HTH a little.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Pretty much all of those adapters...
and their ilk will work fine.

They are what are inside most "USB hard drives", except these don't have the cases.

If you;ve ever had a case for one fo those apart or purchase and empty case from NewEgg or the like... these are exactly what are in them minus that cables.

One other things... USB 1.x SUCKS... slower than ethernet in practice. Make sure you are using USB v2.0 interfaces.

New How do I ensure 2.0?
Is it a software/BIOS setting, or am I pretty much stuck with what's on the mobo?
--

Drew
New If it's not on the mobo, you can add a pci card which has it
New What he said.
the BIOS will let you choose 1.0-1.1/2.0 if it has 2.0 to force 1.1 on non 2.0 devices.

If it works, Linux should tell you what version in /var/log/*something* (messages daemon syslog etc...)

In either case, v2.0 is much faster.
New I'll check, but won't worry too much
This won't be an ongoing issue. Just need to hook it up long enough to move my /home to the new drive. I'll let it run overnight if it's slow.

New Some need a jumper, too.
Ran into that when I built my Myth box a few years ago. The tuner card had a USB component (no, don't ask) and it just would not work as 1.1 was not fast enough. Eventually found a jumper hiding in amongst the slots which changed some minor behaviour of the USB system. Now USB 2.0 worked. It was so wierd...

Such idiocy is unlikely to impair a mass-storage connection, though, as they will work at 1.1.

Q:Is it proper to eat cheeseburgers with your fingers?
A:No, the fingers should be eaten separately.
New Should do.
I bought one for an ancient ATAPI ZIP drive, but I think the drive was faulty. The USB level stuff seemed to worked just fine; but the ZIP drive wouldn't initialize.
