New iPhone 4.0 preview event
Sweet! The iPhone and Touch also get to use bluetooth keyboards.

7 "tentpole" features

  • Multitasking - new APIs for apps to call if they wish to run in the background
  • * audio - took Pandora 1 day to to change their app for multitasking support
  • * VOIP - demoed with Skype
  • * Location - TomTom can give directions while in background. Also a low power "social networking" mode that only triggers location updates when the cell tower changes.
  • * push notifications (already in the phone)
  • * local notifications (sounds like scheduling a calendar notification event)
  • * task completion - allows Flicker to upload in background
  • * fast app switching - saves app state so it doesn't have to reinit when you go back to it.
  • folders - can now group apps into folders, folders are automatically made based on category of app
  • enhanced mail - unified inbox
  • iBooks on the iPhone
  • enterprise features
  • game center - leaderboards, matchmaking for online multiplayer.
  • iAd - advertising into the OS so developers of free games can make money.

iPhone OS 4.0 will run on iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3rd generations (32/64GB from fall 2009). iPhone 3G and touch 3nd gen will support some, but not all (no multitasking), of the new features.

iPhone/touch get 4.0 this summer, while the iPad gets it in the fall.

Was hoping for server-based MobileMe mail rules, sigh.
They said I was gullible ... and I believed them

Worst case, tell your boss it's a new kind of ultra-XML -- not quite invisible, but only very sophisticated and intelligent people can see it...
