Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I have a dream.
Oh wait, sorry. I had a dream. But that damn (dog|kid) emitted
a noise that woke me up.

The kid is in the next room, the dog in the apartment next door.
A little yapper, but something fierce when he wants to pretend to be
tough.

Can't I train the dog?

Given a mike fed into a cpu of some sort, can't I know when a particular
set of frequencies and volume are achieved, and then do something?

And that something in this case would be to trip a decent power
amplifier to broadcast a high frequency signal.

One I can't hear.

I don't want to hurt it, I just want it to trigger on the activity,
and immediately stop when it is gone.

Fine, already been done, here it is:

Which then leads to the kid discussion. She's a SCREAMER. She has
volume that can project aross an auditorium when singing, and she
uses it as a weapon up close occasionally.

And she has INCREDIBLE hearing. Dead noise from the plasma TV (which I
can't hear at all) causes her some serious discomfort.

Wow.

If only there was a device that I could sample her particular
frequencies, and program it in. She screams, it screams back.

If we are talking simple frequencies and volume levels, I could see it done
using a simple breadboard microcomputer setup. I have Parallax basic
stamp 40 hour starter course with a breadboard and a bunch of components.

But I expect to be limited very quickly since I want to match on
sound samples. Which means I need to check out my next steps.

Any pointers?

Basically, when I'm done, I plan on having a dream. Not sure what,
but at least make it possible.

New Variation of noise cancelling headphone circuit?
I'm not sure what you want to do exactly. I think if you want her noises to be sent back to her, all you need is a microphone, an amplifier, and some speakers. Controlling feedback might be an issue, but it shouldn't be too tough to solve.

Do you instead want to do some processing of the sound? If so, a variation on the noise canceling headphone circuit might be a place to start. (Note I haven't done anything like this myself.)

HTH, but don't be too evil about it. :-)

Cheers,
Scott.

New Nope
She cannot be aware of it.

It has to generate pure high pitched noise, that only she can hear (and feel). Through a hidden speaker. This is to train her subconcious.

After about 6 months, I might tell her about it.
New Ah.
Something tied into an electronic dog whistle perhaps?

How to activate it selectively is left as an exercise for the reader. ;-)

Good luck.

Cheers,
Scott.
New As I have a neighbor with a kennel ...
I too have been assessing providing these creatures with their missing MBAs (moderating barking assholery.)

Here be a device which appears to ramp across various frequencies, some in high biped range (for older dogs) as opposed to the many which are indeed ultrasonic. Though maybe you want it entirely 'silent' so as to mess solely with the reptile brain.

Unclear if schematic/tech data would be forthcoming, though one could ask. Note also the remote; conceivably all you'd have to do is parallel the pushbutton on that -- via whatever electronic *gizmo you want to trigger on, as it is set for barking sounds. This provides your manual control/override at what seems an entirely adequate range.

Am pondering this investment in restoring the lovely silence of these parts pre arrival of:
a Big Pharma sales lackey and their undisciplined yap-dogs + a couple bigger basso profundo robotic-persistent types, (triggered oft by yan neighbor's similarly full-automatic silence assassins.)

Pretty steep $$ so the sucker had better perform as claimed; can't see building a new wheel with transistors and messing about on a breadboard -- if this does what is claimed.

* It may be that all you need is a high-pass filter in microphone amp circuit; I'm presuming that the screams are way ^up^ in the AieeeEEEEE!!! - range, as in Piercing, Man.. Thus the occasional "You broke WHAT ?!" -- ought not to trigger your button-pusher circuit. Could be multiple mics too, of course.

Happy gedanken experiments.
New I'm thinking far more
I'll prototype using a real Linux system. It will have a variety of samples that it will need to trigger on. This will be as much voice pattern recognition as it is anything else. The return frequencies will 1st come out of the computer. I'll have to experiment with the best combinations. After that, I may just leave it running, or, if I get really motivated, turn it into an appliance type system.
