New If he fixes it for less than the cost of a new one ...
That's not a ripoff. Laptops are nearing the price where they're disposable. If it weren't for the fact that I'd have to start over setting up everything how I want it, I don't know that I'd bother getting it fixed.

I realized my old laptop is like an old car. Sure, a new one is better in every way. Except that the old one is paid for. If I can get it fixed for half the price of a new one, and it keeps going for another couple of years, I'm good with that.

New Well, do like I do...
I transfer the image from one laptop to the other.

You remember doing it over IM years ago with me right?

Its exactly the same thing with a new laptop.

Transfer and make Linux happy again "resetting it" and letting it auto-configure everything again.

Last year early I moved configs out of the way and let Debian SID re-autoconfigure things.

Glad I did, now everything is managed from normal tools now included in GNOME and KDE.

Or are you talking about Windows?

Edit:
In any case with Linux... you only have to export the package list on the old box, import the list on the new box and do a proper upgrade.

Then just copy your homedir in its entirety and voila new and old the same.

New Ubuntu
But with this laptop not working, how do you propose I transfer the image to a new one?

New its still a hard disk.
Can you ssh into it?

Or is it completely borkened?
New Could probably SSH
But I'd still rather have it fixed.

New What I am saying...
If you can SSH into it... you can transfer the image.

Sorry I suggested it.
