New Wish I could find this quote ... AScott?
I read something from the early lat 1800s or early 1900s, when someone said no one would take something as useful as oil -- which they were already using to make plastics and various other chemicals -- and burn it just to get from place to place.
--

Drew
New George Whitesides said something similar.
I can't find that version, but George Whitesides apparently said something similar - http://thinkexist.co...to-be/529322.html

The highest value for oil is going to be feedstocks for chemicals, ... It's pretty much indefensible to just burn it in SUVs.

I can't see that they give a cite, but it might have been at TED - http://www.ted.com/s...hitesides&x=0&y=0 .

In the process of looking, I came across an online version of an old History of Standard Oil from 1904. The first chapter or two talk about all of the things that petroleum was used for - gasoline isn't mentioned. ;-) It's a fascinating book.

The quote you're looking for may be in there, but it didn't jump out at me.

HTH!

Cheers,
Scott.
New Probably got it from Kunstler, now that I think about it
Can't find it on his site either. Could have been a link from there. Oh well.

Drew
New Just think about it though...
How much *MORE* carbon fossil fuels we could burn through... iffin we'd have thought about drilling and recovering hydrates.

In the mid to late 1800s, imagine drilling for oil... TOUGH TOUGH TOUGH. Probably no more tough than recovering gas hydrates if they'd have really know about them.

They'd have discovered a way.

We KNOW drill rigs have hit Hydrate Deposits before, as they nearly always BLOW UP when that happens. So it more accessible than we probably think.
New Accessible? Sure, but there's that whole "blowing up" thing.

Drew
New Blows up ....
Because the hydrates just leak from around the drill pipe and the methane collects around the drill rig and one spark == BOOM!
Arctic seabed methane is venting. - (Another Scott) - (10)
         What about the... - (folkert) - (9)
More carbon there than in coal... - (Another Scott) - (8)
                 Wow. - (folkert) - (6)
