I didn't have it turned on automatically or have it spraying stuff all over the place.

It seems they've tweaked things.
I'm logged into Gmail all the time from several PCs. I didn't notice anything about Buzz until I had to reboot one of them and relogin to Gmail. Then, on logging into Gmail, there was the Buzz promo and when I clicked "Just take me to my InBox", it showed it with an additional Buzz linky on the left that seemed to be doing something.
At that point, I turned it off (a link at the bottom of the page). I personally felt like they were pushing it too hard without explaining more about the sharing implications.
