New Re: I know you're in California ...
Well, when you've got front wheel drive, and are going up 5 miles of very steep incline, which incline has turned into a fast moving river with an inch of water going the other way at high speed, and you're going 50 or more, you're going to have some uncertain traction.

I drove my 69/70/71 Beetle/Superbeetle (depending on which VIN plate you looked at) across such a road. I went into the intersection in the right lane of two, came out the other side of the intersection 1-1/2 lanes into oncoming traffic.

New Fortunately . . .
. . my little Saturn wagon has extremely good directional stability. Actually, it's the best handling car I've ever owned, and that includes the Jaguars and other sports cars.

In directional stability it is only exceeded by my 1948 MG TC, which had 50%/50% weight distribution, but having solid axles at both ends it didn't corner as well on rough roads.
