thats what I get. I'm at work.

and, fwiw, i would rather see the picture AFTER selecting a menu item...though I know thats not what you were going for here.

Having all those images load at once is always going to be a resource/bandwidth problem...not just for you...but your clientèle.
I will choose a path that's clear. I will choose freewill.
New Crap, hadn't thought about that
Guess it's a good thing I only set it up for that one page. I'll try flipping it to serve the images from my server and monitor it for a while to see what happens.

If it still kills my server (shouldn't, just serving static images, but who knows?) I'll just tell people sorry, that's not going to be available from work for now.

New Wow, okay, that's definitive
I started serving the images on that page from my server instead of the CDN and my memory use, which had been bouncing between 150M and 350M, suddenly hit 594M.

That page is serving several hundred small images, generally in the 15k-40k range. Are there any good tricks for making that more efficient? (Aside from compressing the images, which I'm already working on.)

New a second instance of Apache...
Running as a reverse proxy to static images and the real content?

So you run the caching proxy in front of everything.
New Still wondering if a slight redesign wouldn't be better
Start with the index, and maybe one picture of a general item...then have each section as a separate page with the full pictures. It would provide generally the same feel but be much easier on bandwidth...that page takes forever to load for me even when it isn't pulling up the pictures.
I will choose a path that's clear. I will choose freewill.
New Yup, working on that
The way I wrote that page, it will be trivial to pass in parameters to the query. First cut will be passing in the category, and show one category at a time. Second cut will be a list of "tag" checkboxes, with an "and/or" selector.

Once I do that, and finish tagging everything, you'll be able to select for instance: Category = 'Side', tags = 'potato AND bacon' and you'll get the twice-baked potatoes. Or: Category = 'Dinner' and tags = 'chicken OR fish' and get back all those. Much easier on system resources, and a better UI at the same time.

New Try this version
http://cooklikeyourg...g/recipe-browser/

You can still get to the full listing, but I made it pretty clear I'd rather you didn't.
