New One reason the country is in such bad shape
http://news.yahoo.co...t/us_bcs_congress
Dismissing complaints from some members that Congress had more pressing matters, a House subcommittee approved legislation Wednesday aimed at forcing college football to switch to a playoff system to determine its national champion.

Yep, Congress is spending a bit of time attacking the BCS when it could be dealing with other matters. A few voices objecting to Congress spending it's time on such a matter, but not much. And really, how is a playoff better then the BCS? Playoffs usually favor teams that got weak opponents in the early rounds, and often reduce to who is luckier in a few key games.

Notice that not one, even those opposed to the bill, pointed out that the best interest of country probably lies with suppressing the pseudo-professional college sports in general and getting them back to actually teaching.

New Almost everyone mis-reporting this
For what it's worth, they're not actually requiring a playoff system. What the legislation says is you can't call a game a "national championship" unless it was the result of a playoff.

That's a reasonable position, but should be handled by the FTC under truth-in-advertising guidelines.

New I don't care if it's reasonable
I don't care if it's a reasonable position or not. I don't want congress wasting it's time with such matters.

New House subcommittees aren't the problem.
There are lots and lots of them and they have hearings on lots of things. E.g. http://www.contactin...list.cgi?site=ctc Yeah, the BCS, etc., is probably not worth having a hearing over.

But that's not the problem. The Senate is the problem. That's the reason why important legislation isn't moving quickly. I can't see the cloture rules in the Senate changing significantly anytime soon.

Cheers,
Scott.
(Who wonders what it would be like to have cloture require 50%+1 of the Senators present...)
New prefer them wasting time on that than fcking up the country
New When did they start doing that?
The truth in advertising stuff I mean.
