Google - now that is really dumb.
Tried to buy something from an on-line store that uses Google Checkout. You have to set up a Google account. No problem - except: you can't set up a Google account unless you have a texting cell-phone.
Period. No exceptions. Their instructions say if you don't have one you have to use someone elses.
Well, my antique cell phone doesn't text - so this store lost the sale.

Must be something in the air.
Fallows had a similar experience, but different - http://jamesfallows....ience_good_an.php

And Google responds.

Turns out, he was in China at the time, using an IP range that had been dodgy in the past...

Er, I didn't...
I just connected mine to my gmail account. Maybe that was the difference.
Or maybe they've added that since.

Gmail accounts are Google accounts now, anyway.
And IIRC signing up to Gmail requires an SMS-capable phone, if you don't have an invite or some other way to verify your identify.

Nope.
I've created several accounts over the last month with nothing more than name and another email address.

Try it without 'another email address'.
I'm almost willing to bet it will ask for a phone to send an SMS to. It did last time I did that, but it was quite a while ago.

Blimey
What is your phone? Even the StarTAC does SMS, and that's from 1996...

It's a Motorola/Nextel i1000 plus
The manual's index has no entries for SMS or Text.

Re: It's a Motorola/Nextel i1000 plus
I have a hard time believing that phone doesn't support SMS. It has a web browser...
Try sending an email message to yourPhone#@messaging.nextel.com.
Update: your phone manual calls it "Message Mail", not SMS. :-)

Here ya go.
http://servicemyphon...companion_pro.jsp
This PC based software application enables you to retrieve and or/modify call lists and set up ergonomic preferences in your Motorola iDEN phone. It also allows you to send SMS messages to other Motorola iDEN Phones.
In reviews I've seen - http://www.streettec...gadget/i1000.html , it mentions that the phone can do SMS.
You probably wouldn't want to with just 12 keypad buttons, though...
HTH.
Cheers,
Scott.
(Who realizes the software may not help much as it's for Winders...)
