What's the best process list analyzer for Windows?
My sister's Windows XP PC is in need of some TLC and I'm the first port of call. She is generally quite a good "client" and doesn't do dumb things, which is why I'm willing to help, but it is still Windows. (She needs to use several Adobe applications, so switching her to Linux is too big an ask.)
Recently, it's been swapping something ferocious. This tends to upset Illustrator, especially when Photoshop is also running. Her anti-malware/virus-checker is AVG Free and is up-to-date so my normal approach would be to try to find what is eating up so much memory. So what sort of tools would the IGM recommend?
Wade.

Swap file too small? Otherwise---
Some decent utilities --

Get diskmon and filemon. Between those two you should find the culprit.

Best? I dunno.
I usually just do Ctrl-Alt-Delete, hit down-arrow until the Task Manager is selected, then look at the Process tab. Sorting by CPU or Mem Usage usally gives some indication of what's going on if something isn't right.
There may be some magic that can be done with MS's various free SysInternals tools as well - e.g. http://technet.micro...als/bb896653.aspx I haven't tried it myself.
There's also Registry Mechanic by PC Tools. ;-) The "System Information" -> Software Environment -> Running Tasks or Loaded Modules seems to give a lot more details.
HTH a little.
Cheers,
Scott.

... or the command line alternative pslist (& pskill), when the malware you're trying to find actively tries to stop you from running Process Explorer, but doesn't know about pslist :)

Ask is a verb.

Besides, nouning verbs and verbing nouns is how a...
language evolves and becomes richer!
Talk the talk and walk the walk.
N'est-ce pas? :)

If verbing weirds language...
