J has a black MacBook (MB404LL/A) that has treated her well thus far. I'd been looking at getting another one for me when I saw that up to *6* GB of RAM can be installed in it, though one loses dual-channel that way.
http://www.everymac....penryn-specs.html The new 13" MacBook Pro seems comparable, but is faster, takes more RAM, etc., etc. It would be nearly perfect if it were a little lighter (it's 4.5 pounds). Congrats!
I got a 15" MBP back in November, quite happy with it. I'd upgraded mine to 2.8GHz, 4G and 512MB video, but only have a 320GB drive. That ran me to just over 3K with tax, so the price has definitely dropped a lot.
I do have a minor issue with the video-out occasionally not realizing it's hooked up to a DVI monitor. The screen will only contain red, green and blue dots, no recognizable image. Easy fix is to switch monitor inputs to VGA then back to DVI or to unplug/replug in the cable. It doesn't happen a lot but seems to be related to waking up from sleep. I don't care for the glossy screens so I put on an anti-glare film from Photodon: http://www.photodon.com/c/PF.html |

Replacement
It's a replacement for my current 1st Gen MBP 2.16GHz CoreDuo, 2G RAM, 200G (upgraded from 100G) HDD that's 3 years old. This one will go to my son, replacing his 6 year old 14" iBook G4
