New The other 8 bits form the alpha channel
The card uses 8 bits per color and the 32 bit selection contains only 24 color bits.
New Understood. But...
But I'm seeing no difference between "16-bit" and "32-bit" color on the Samsung.

Hmm. I don't see any difference in the Windows color setting on my 1680x1050 T61 screen either. Changing between 16-bit and 32-bit shows the same color bands in the Display Properties box. But I don't see the skin-tone problems here - faces look fine.

Curious.

Maybe I messed things up when I used "Monitor Calibration Wizard" to set up the Samsung. I'll have to try it again...

Thanks.

Cheers,
Scott.
New getting old? /me flees
New Don't go by the Display Properties thingy
It has never worked right. I know you're working with an NVidia card, but e.g. almost all versions of Intel's integrated graphics chips suffer that issue.

Go find some monitor test patterns and see what they tell you (One here, but there are others out there: http://www.stargazin...testpatterns.html)
New I agree...
Try this place:

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

Lotsa good info and calibration tends to really make a difference for me on thing.
New Thanks both of you. I'll give it a shot.
New Bingo.
http://www.stargazin...testpatterns.html shows a smooth transition in the 255-step grayscale.

http://www.lagom.nl/...test/contrast.php shows that I'm seeing more than 16 bit color as well.

The weird colors for faces seems to have been due to a conflict between the Adobe Gamma control panel widget and "Monitor Calibration Wizard". Exiting MCW and using Adobe's tool gives much more natural looking colors, but it's not quite as flexible as MCW in making the fine adjustments.

I'll mess around with this some more when I get time, but as it stands now it looks much better. (Before highlights on faces were very red.)

Thanks again.

Cheers,
Scott.

They're a cornered rat, and quite frankly, I think they have rabies to boot. I'd rather not get too close to them.
