Real engineers who aren't constrained by bean counters can do amazing things.

My Dad had a Volvo 760 GLE that had a poorly designed A/C system. I'm probably mis-remembering, but I think it had a board that monitored the cabin temperature and adjusted things to keep the temperature constant. It was often failing. My EE Dad decided to diagnose the problem and fix it. He modified the circuit board and took care of the problem. He even went the extra mile of contacting Volvo to let them know of the fixes he made. I don't know if he ever heard anything back from them.
