Back when the real IWT still lived (cough, cough) I posted a link to Douglas Englebart's legendary 1968 demo in which, albeit in primitive, cobbled-together fashion, many of the elements of the modern GUI were introduced to an audience of thunderstruck cognoscenti (who did not, of course, in the least regard the demo as "primitive"). I suspect that this demo at TED, which already looks cobbled-together, will yield up a smooth user experience in much less time than it took to go from 1968 to the first Macintosh, or even the Xerox Alto.
