Does CoolType work on desktop LCD's?

I've seen Peter rave about the performance of CoolType on laptops and figured it should work as well on a dektop LCD. The only thing I can find that seems to be nearly what I'm looking for is Display Properties->Effects->Smooth Edges of Screen Fonts. Is this the same as CoolType? I've tried it and can't see any difference. I can't be a Democrat because I like to spend the money I make. I can't be a Republican because I like to spend the money I make on drugs and whores.

(CoolType is an alternative font antialiasing method that Adobe Acrobat has.) W2K doesn't have it, sorry :( If you get XP, yes, ClearType will look wondrous for you.
