New Clueless, but
When I went from Solaris to Linux, there was a bunch of stuff that only worked using RH (or Centos) enterprise large system kernel.
Not that these settings/patches can't be anywhere else in another dist, just it was configured for big iron already.
You might want to give it a shot.
New Using a "Debian" based distro...
Like Ubuntu == "server" kernel required.

Debian uses "-bigmem" kernel for these functions.

Unless you are using 64-bit. Then it doesn't matter.

CentOS/RHEL you have to use the "ELhugemem" kernel now a day, unless you are using 64-bit again.
