New what is the linux equivelent od solaris plimit?
New its settable in /etc/security/limits.conf
I think that is what you are looking for.

There are defaults that can and are limiting.

That file should have comments in it if its a recent Linux distro.

And its PAM* that typically does all this stuff for you now.

*PAM == Pluggable Authentication Module (but does way more)

New Re: its settable in /etc/security/limits.conf
looks like the right file, so I set it in there, logged in as the user and 1/2 the time it would show the correct limit. Rebooting the box to see if that changes anything
thanx greg, owe ya one
New how does root assign a larger ulimit -n to a user?
I can raise root, but am constrained by raising the limit as a user
thanx,
bill
New in /etc/security/limits.conf
and have it stick.
New Hmm
I seem to recall ulimit settings in a file that gets read during login.
New Clueless, but
When I went from Solaris to Linux, there was a bunch of stuff that only worked using RH (or Centos) enterprise large system kernel.
Not that these settings/patches can't be anywhere else in another dist, just it was configured for big iron already.
You might want to give it a shot.
New Using a "Debian" based distro...
Like Ubuntu == "server" kernel required.

Debian uses "-bigmem" kernel for these functions.

Unless you are using 64-bit. Then it doesn't matter.

CentOS/RHEL you have to use the "ELhugemem" kernel now a day, unless you are using 64-bit again.
