Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Posting this from a brand-new MacBook
So far, mostly confusion...

Due to some "nice" features in Leopard Dock, I need to make a small image, an Icon. In Windows, I knew how to do it. On Mac, I am lost...

Anyone cares to give a hint?

New grrr... Changed the folder icon, but stacks not showing it
soooo lost!

New in the end, made an "alias"
Replaced the folder with its own "alias" in the dock, as some kind soul advised.

More gripes: the fonts are too small, no way to set screen's DPI, or at least Finder's font and menu font (not that I can see, anyway). Safari still feels quite alien, may end up replacing it with FF.

Help window always on top, can't figure out how to disable that.

In general, things that I expect to be there are not, such as page up/down and other auxiliary keys, most configurations, other crap. No doubt I'll get into the groove eventually, but for now it's not pleasant.

New I use Firefox in preference to Safari
It works more consistently. Web sites that do User Agent detection will sometimes break. Microsoft has a site that just plain doesn't work at all in Safari, even though it renders fine on Firefox.

In Tiger (dunno about Leopard yet), font sizes for Finder are under the View menu as "Show View Options" (Apple-J key).

New Err, how do I set the default font size?
The one you mention sets it on folder-by-folder basis...

New Dunno.
On my machines here (running Tiger) it sets the size for all folders.

New Unfortunately, you'll probably need a book.
[link|http://www.amazon.com/Mac-OS-Tiger-Missing-Manual/dp/0596009410/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1195876578&sr=8-1|OS X Tiger Missing Manual] is something I just ordered for our dual G5 PowerMac (which can't run Leopard). The Leopard version of the book is due out in 2-3 weeks.

Short of that, maybe [link|http://interfacelift.com/icons-mac/faq.php|this] will help.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Scott.
(Who hasn't tried to make icons on OS X.)

New OK, this is really agravating
The whole reason to buy apple was to avoid crap like this.

The sucker can't see my Vista workgroup.

I was able to access the shared disk folder by entering the IP address directly, but the printer config does not give me such an option.

I am beginning to think about taking the POS back. I really liked the 5hrs+ battery time, but this is just too much.

New It's different.
The difference may be too aggravating, I can understand that. But don't give up out of frustration. I wouldn't be surprised if Vista was the problem - e.g. [link|http://chris.pirillo.com/2007/03/07/file-sharing-from-windows-vista-to-os-x/|Sharing from Vista to OS X].

Hang in there...

New Your link explains how to do it the other way round
How to share Mac folders to Vista

(Looks like I got burned by "early adopter" thing again - Leopard has some problems in this area)

[link|http://www.vistax64.com/vista-general/53712-connecting-osx-macs.html|Connecting both ways]. I don't know if Leopard is somehow broken in this area, but if so there must be a work-around.

Good luck.

Scott.

New Set the reg value to 1 as they recommend
Still no go.

I am spending my second hour bounced around between Apple tech support people, mostly quite clueless. They have a huge call volume, which tells me I am not the only one having trouble.

[link|http://omega.med.yale.edu/~pcy5/misc/overlord2.htm|.]

New Spent a few hours on hold, in the end was told
that there is no support for connecting to Windows shares, and I should try forums.

Or I can try to stay with Windows, or Linux. This disaster is as bad as anything I experienced in MS realm.

I will inquire tomorrow on whether the Apple store will take this thing back. Beautiful hardware, but the software and support are crap.

[link|http://omega.med.yale.edu/~pcy5/misc/overlord2.htm|.]

New Keep it and install Windows
Like you said, beautiful hardware.

I have one, sitting unused for the last several months. Almost all corporate desktop stuff I need to do is via rdesktop to a vmware windows instance. Linux for everything else. The only thing I needed it for was when I occasionally went on the road and needed to ssh back to my systems in an emergency. Now that I have a Blackberry with ssh, I don't even need that.

My boss was a serious Windows geek, and then got into Linux for backend and Mac for his desktop/laptop. He's gently pushing executives in my company to try the Mac, but he's in the terrible position of being the only one who really understands it. That mean the VP becomes tech support, which CANNOT happen.
New I am afraid.
Having no support from manufacturer stinks. And Apple certainly will not support Vista any better than they support their own stuff.

New I wouldn't expect quick solutions from the manufacturer.
A vibrant user community will almost always give you quicker response than the manufacturer. You know MS would charge a fortune for detailed personal support, if they had a solution.... Be happy that Apple has a lot of enthusiastic users.

Did you see [link|http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?objID=c235&search=Go&q=vista+share|these threads] in Apple's forums regarding sharing with Vista?

If you must have Windows, [link|http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/02/10/how-to-install-vista-in-os-x-using-parallels-a-complete-walkthrough/|Parallels] is an option you might consider while these issues are being resolved.

HTH! Good luck.

Cheers,
Scott.

New I would, when I was dealing with Apple
I would be wrong, of course.

But in the end, you are right. I ended up finding [link|http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t537509.html|this]. This is a workaround I can use for now.

The printout quality seems to stink comparing to Windows - the colors and blacks are all "washed out". No printer driver options are available. I had to rename my Windows printer to have no spaces in the name.

Another aspect of this find that is not very encouraging is the fact that it's dated from March. Apple had to know about it for a while, and they just don't care even to acknowledge the problem.

No, this is not a comforting thing at all.

New Epson I560

New Er, wait...
Epson doesn't make an I560 that I can find. Canon does, however...

New Printers...
I had an i560, and discovered that the quality was amazing, but only when the printer was connected directly. There were drivers available but for some reason I couldn't get them to work over the network. Until I changed the print server. :-P

New Re: can't see my Vista workgroup
I presume you've looked at Finder and see no SHARED category of things in between the DEVICES and PLACES categories. On my Mac I can see my wife's Windows XP system and it's shared directories. I did nothing at all to make show up there. I'm running Leopard.

New It may be Vista's fault
but I don't care. Like I said, Apple is not in position to say "we don't support it". Their entire reputation hinges on "just working". If they were simply to tell me to wait for a fix, I'd accept it. They are swamped with calls at the moment (an hour on hold between two transfers), but they won't admit they have a problem. Well, guess what. When you don't live up to your reputation, there are consequences.
