The "resource" Fork?

You have Fink installed?

Fink keeps its "install" stuff somewhere.

New Macs have 'split' files.
Open an executable file one way, and you get the executable content. Open it another way, you get all the GUI things it needs to let you use it (icons, menus, dialog boxes, etc). The first is called the Data Fork, the second is called the [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource_fork[Resource Fork|http://en.wikipedia....ork[Resource Fork].

The idea is a specific instance of Windows NT's [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fork_(filesystem)|alternate data streams]. And I believe Hans Reiser has gone on record saying this concept would be a good thing to add to Linux.

New My mac's at the office so this is guessing
Use the "du" command at the top of the root, and then for each set of the directories as you focus down to find the space usage.
New Focus in on the largest quickly...
du / | sort -n | tail -10 to see the largest 10 directories under your root dir.

At least, that works on Linux. YMMV on Mac, for all I know.

New On my MacBook one gets:
du: /.Spotlight-V100: Permission denied
du: /.Trashes: Permission denied

New Re: On my MacBook one gets:
Try adding sudo to the start of the command, before the du. You should be prompted for your password at that point.

New Indeed, sudo does it.
$ sudo du / | sort -n | tail -10

WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss
or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your
typing when using sudo. Type "man sudo" for more information.

To proceed, enter your password, or type Ctrl-C to abort.

New I GUESS it was ok
The "vm" scares me - it make me thing of virutal memory, but the private should make it safe.

In the future, wander into the dir and use strings against the files to look in them to see if you recongnize anything.
New didnt look at the .Trash files... hmm
